Taught by Melisa Deane
December 2012 – May 2013

Course Description

This six-month course is for anyone who wants to deepen their practice, learn more about the art and science of yoga, change their lives, learn and be able to teach Ashtanga yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and other types of yoga classes.

Based on Pattabhi Jois’ Ashtanga Vinyasa method, students will first learn the postures, philosophy, and sequencing of Ashtanga’s Primary Series. Modifications, anatomy and physiology are emphasized to make this vigorous practice accessible to everyone. Students will be stronger, leaner, feel lighter and deeply connected to their purpose within just a few months. Journaling, self-observation, meditation and establishing a home practice are required.

Once students are fluent in the Primary Series, they will learn how to create and sequence classes for diverse populations. Students are encouraged to experiment with choreography and modifications to create a class format for their target populations, such as “Yoga for Seniors,” “Yoga for Athletes,” “Gentle Yoga,” and “Vinyasa Yoga.”

Students will also teach one class to inner city youth through our Karma yoga program at a local non-profit organization.
